Motor & Drive Preventive Maintenance
Los Angeles

Motors and drives are the most failure-prone components in most industrial facilities. Regular PM catches winding degradation, bearing wear, and drive issues before they shut down your line.

The Program

Motor & Drive Preventive Maintenance

Industrial motors and variable frequency drives are the workhorses of manufacturing, food processing, cold storage, and process facilities across Los Angeles. They also fail more than any other category of electrical equipment — and most of those failures are predictable. Direct Source provides motor and VFD preventive maintenance programs for industrial facilities across Los Angeles.

Schedule: Quarterly motor and VFD PM for high-criticality production equipment, semi-annual for lower-criticality systems.

Motor Insulation Resistance Testing

Megger testing (insulation resistance measurement) on motor windings to detect insulation degradation before it causes a motor failure. Baseline readings established and tracked across visits.

Megger trending over multiple visits is far more valuable than a single reading — it shows the rate of deterioration.

Motor Connection & Terminal Inspection

Motor terminal box inspection, connection torque verification, cable insulation inspection, grounding continuity check, and conduit entry condition assessment for production motor installations.

Loose motor terminals are a leading cause of motor overheating and premature failure. We find and fix them.

VFD Preventive Maintenance

VFD cooling fan and heat sink cleaning, DC bus capacitor inspection, control board visual inspection, parameter backup, input and output terminal inspection, and operating condition verification for production VFDs.

Dirty VFD cooling systems are the most common cause of drive failures in industrial environments. We clean them.

Soft Starter PM

Soft starter contact and thyristor inspection, bypass contactor check, overload relay calibration, control circuit inspection, and starting performance verification for soft starter applications.

Soft starter problems often show up as nuisance trips or sluggish starts — we diagnose and correct them.

Thermal Imaging of Motor Systems

Infrared thermography of energized motor control panels, VFD enclosures, motor terminal boxes, and MCC buckets to identify hot spots indicating overloaded circuits, loose connections, or failing components.

Thermal imaging finds problems that look fine from the outside — inside the enclosure is a different story.

Motor & Drive Asset Register

We build and maintain an asset register of your motors and drives — nameplate data, location, PM history, megger trend data, and condition status.

An asset register makes capital replacement planning data-driven, not reactive.

Why Direct Source

What Makes Our Program Different

We use actual diagnostic tools

Motor PM is not just wiping down a motor and calling it done. We use megger testers, thermal cameras, and clamp meters to measure actual condition — and we track that data across visits.

All motor and drive brands

We work on motors from all major manufacturers (Baldor/ABB, Leeson, Marathon, Siemens, US Motors) and VFDs from all major platforms (Allen-Bradley PowerFlex, Siemens Sinamics, ABB, Yaskawa, Danfoss).

Based in Santa Fe Springs — fast LA Basin coverage

Our shop is in Santa Fe Springs, central to the LA Basin industrial corridor. Short drive to Vernon, City of Industry, Commerce, Gardena, and surrounding areas.

PM clients get priority emergency response

When a motor or drive fails between scheduled PM visits, PM contract clients get priority scheduling. We get there faster, and we already know your equipment from the PM history.

Every Visit Includes

  • Electrical and mechanical inspection
  • Infrared thermography (thermal imaging)
  • Written condition report
  • Deferred items ranked by priority
  • Emergency response priority between visits

Cities served: Los Angeles, Vernon, City of Industry, Commerce, Compton, Gardena, Santa Fe Springs, and all LA Basin industrial markets.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is megger testing and why does it matter for motor PM?

Megger testing (insulation resistance testing) measures the resistance of a motor’s winding insulation to ground. Healthy windings have very high insulation resistance. As insulation degrades, resistance drops — and eventually the winding fails to ground, causing a motor burnout. Regular megger testing detects this degradation early, allowing planned motor replacement instead of an unplanned failure.

How often should industrial motors and VFDs be PM’d?

High-criticality production motors typically warrant quarterly PM — megger testing, thermal imaging, and connection inspection. VFDs in manufacturing environments need cooling system cleaning at least semi-annually. We assess your specific equipment duty cycle and criticality and build a schedule accordingly.

Can you maintain VFDs from multiple manufacturers?

Yes. We work on all major VFD platforms — Allen-Bradley PowerFlex series, Siemens Sinamics, ABB ACS series, Yaskawa A1000/V1000, Danfoss, and others.

Do you provide the megger test data and thermal images in your PM reports?

Yes. Our motor and drive PM reports include the megger readings (insulation resistance values with pass/fail assessment), thermal images of any findings, connection torque check results, and VFD parameter backup confirmation.

Do you serve manufacturing facilities outside of Los Angeles?

Yes. We serve manufacturing facilities throughout Southern California — the Inland Empire (Ontario, Chino, Riverside), Orange County (Anaheim, Irvine), and surrounding areas.
